What color is an electron?

Description

She stared into open space before turning to me.

"You do not understand yet, and I can permit you to go no further until you do."

Streams of plasma arced between her fingers.

"Color is merely the wavelength of a photon, released when an electron changes position in an atom. But what color is a lone electron? It only absorbs and releases photons in the presence of an atom's energy well. What is its color when it is alone?"

In an instant, everything became black and white.

"It has no color. Protons have no color, neutrons have no color. For color to exist they must be together. If you knew everything about electrons, protons, and neutrons it still would be nearly impossible to imagine colors, chemical bonds, DNA, self-sustaining organisms..."

She bent over and looked me in the eye. I could do nothing more but stare into one of hers.

"And you."

The color returned, with a nearly audible gasp that I may have imagined.

"Simple things become complex, complex things become simple. Do not presume that understanding things at one scale lends knowledge of the other. Always expect strangeness."

She ruffled her feathers in the golden cloudlight.

"Even metaphors will fail sometimes child, remember that."

And then she was gone.

Obsidian explains emergence in a cryptic manner, which is surprising given her general playfulness, whatever's going on must be serious :O

I finally sat myself down and finished this. The hardest part was NOT adding more detail. Photoshop and tablet.
