That cat is not impressed with your house obtaining skills Mille :|

So, I drew a comic! At least one page of it. I've been all antsy lately about how to get the Babyface universe out of my head and onto paper, because it seems somewhat useless to talk about it as opposed to showing it.

The thing is... comics take a lot of time. I could probably finish a page in two workdays, but I don't have all that much free time and I'd like to draw other things and do other things too. If I did a comic like this it would be a year before I had one story arc completed.

I might try to write instead and have a lot of illustrations, I think that might be better. I love art but there's a certain economy that words have. I just worry about how to go about a narrative words/illustration hybrid (I've seen some excellent documentary style hybrids like ~nemoramjet's All Tomorrows, but not many narrative ones). I also don't know very much about writing.

If you've got any thoughts I'd like to hear them, I'm still waffling on what to try.

This page is spectacularly boring, no monsters or trees or awesome textures at all. I needed practice with boring things though. Also I am rather pleased with Millie.

As for the styling, I imagine sometime around 2050 there was an art nouveau resurgence. The couch has a small amount of that styling. There's also fake wood floors. During the 2080's when this takes place there's a much simpler 1970's/80's -esque graphic styling in place, which makes for some interesting juxtapositions and is not at all an excuse to draw that sort of thing. Not at all.

Photoshop, wacom tablet.

I'm sure the cat will turn out to be hiding a giant mech under the fake wooden floor or something, or perhaps some one will just tear the wall out. This is fun though, it is interesting to see you draw some one who is a non-altered human. I like how this came out, your style of shading is a lot of fun to see.

I think it would work out nicely for you to write about the world, and supplement in the drawings where ever they fit, such as introducing a new character or location, or just a neat scene. Over all though I think that the story would work well as a written story, as it would allow you to put in the wonderful details you have come up with for the world. With a comic you don't get to put as many of the details in as you might with a written version.

Perhaps you could write most of the story, using pictures to supplement and illustrate, and then use an occasional comic when you feel like it? Then you would be able to use a comic for the scenes where you feel it would fit, but also not spend all of your time drawing out comic pages.

Good luck! It would be neat to see this world brought to life with a story, where others are able to explore this wonderful world you have been building, through the characters. There are so many ways that it could go, and I think that you would be able to write all of them beautifully.

One can also argue that words-books are the greatest medium, since there is no parallel to the imagination. Words can convey images that are hard to create, in a few moments, if you choose the right ones... ah and what are the right ones... I really don't think you need to learn more about writing. All they teach you in creative writing classes is how to get new ideas (something you don't have a problem with) and how to analyze others, compartmentalizing all their effort... I personally think you write quite well, from the short stories you posted here. So there is nothing wrong with writing an actual book, with some illustrations along the way. One of my favorites is Divine Comedy with illustrations by Gustave Doré. The positive element is that if you are going to have a few illustrations throughout the whole book, so you can spend more time on each one making it more of a painting- one piece, then an illustration.
Book is the way to go!

That's very true, books are hard to compare to.

Hmmm, I had forgotten about the Divine Comedy. That's an excellent example.

Thank you for your input!

Just a thought, mostly text stories with illustrations work okay for narrative, if you do it right. For example, Paul Gazis' The Flying Cloud is mostly text, with one rough drawing of something which happened in the story at the top. This, while not perfect, communicates pretty well. I guess it's kind of an illustrated novel, with one picture to every three pages or so of text. Anyway, my point is that I would really like to see more of this extraordinarily badass world, and think a text/picture hybrid can work really well if the content is compelling. From what you have done so far, I think good content is almost a foregone conclusion.

Thank you! That's a really good point, and I think I'm leaning towards the mostly text idea.

Off to do some plotting!

I feel your pain. Hours and hours spent on single panels, and then the readers do not even take a closer look at it, because all they need is some general information (who's where and talking) and then spend more time reading the word bubbles than consciously viewing the pictures...
